Introduction
Punjab is a sub –tropical State which has extreme
weather conditions with severe cold during December- January
and scorching heat during May- June. Thus the climate of
Punjab is not conductive for the optimum growth of sugarcane
crop as from July to October after which drop in temperature
induces sugar accumulation and ripening. But, even though
the climatic conditions for sugarcane cultivation in Punjab
are bit as conducive as in tropical areas. It provides alternative
to widely adopted wheat-paddy cropping system. Development
of improved varieties and new crop production ,plant protection
and processing technologies have played a vital role in
promoting sugarcane cultivation and expansion of sugar industry.
During the
year 1965-66, there were 5 sugar mills in the state with
crushing capacity of 4950 TCD (tonnes Cane Daily). At present
22 sugar mills are working, out of which 15 are in cooperative
sector and 7 are in private sector. Apart from these, one
cooperative sector sugar mill at Budhalada is under liquidation
since 1995-96. The total crushing capacity of the 22 working
sugar mils is 52016 TCD. The area under sugarcane during
the year 2003-04 was 1.35 lakh hectares from which about
80.85 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was produced with an average
productivity of 59.89 tonnes per hectares. The total cane
crushed by the mills during 2003-04 was 40.65 lakh tonnes,
sugar produced was 3.94 lakh tonnes and sugar recovery was
9.70%.
Overview
1. To increase
the production-cum-productivity of sugarcane and increase
the recovery of sugar.
2. To improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of cultivation
by adopting latest technologies.
3. Rapid multiplication of disease-free seed of new improved
varieties of sugarcane.
4. To encourage diversification in agriculture.
5. To safeguard the interests of cane growers and sugar
industry by monitoring and enforcing the Acts, rules
and orders.

Tissue
Culture in Punjab
Seed multiplication of
sugarcane by tissue culture technique offer mass multiplication
of new varieties and hence facilitates their speed; much
faster as compared to conventional method. Using tissue
culture, the old varieties which have become susceptible
to diseases can also be rejuvenated by taking diseases free
apical Bud for mass multiplication of seed of a variety
have evolved and become prevalent in a region, thereby prolong
the field life of a variety. Secondly, transportation of
seed material from national/international level be dispensed
with, thus eliminate seed transmitted diseases and pests.
Punjab Government provided financial assistance as grant-in-aid
for the establishment of tissue culture laboratories in
the following sugar mills

The cost
of sugarcane seed produced through tissue culture techniques
comes approximately to Rs. 4 to 5 per Plantlet which is
costly, but the sugar mills provide this deed at the rate
of 0.75 to 3 per Plantlet on subsidized rate to the cane
growers.
