Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India and Capt. Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab took personal interest in making the Institute a reality.

Principals' Workshops
Principals Workshops are organised so as to make the Principals conversant with the number of development schemes for the colleges and developments in the field of academics. One such Workshop was organised by the College Development Council of the University which was addressed by Dr. C.S.Meena, Joint Secretary, UGC. He said that UGC has formulated a number of Development Schemes for the Colleges to enable them to achieve threshold level. Financial Assistance is given for modernizing teaching, research and administration. It is also given for the purpose of buildings, equipments, campus development, health centres, staff, books and journals, and student amenities. Special development grants are provided for backward areas, adult and continuing education, promotion of Yoga education and positive health. Value based education and human rights are also covered under these grants.
Another Workshop was organised by Academic Staff College of the University. It was addressed by Dr. N.K.Jain, Joint Secretary, UGC and Mr. Ganesh Hagde, Assistant Adviser, NAAC, Bangalore. The Principals of the affiliated Colleges participated in these Workshops. Focus of this Workshop was as to how the NAAC accredited institutions could avail themselves of MoUs with foreign Universities and other institutions.

Innovative and Healthy Practices
During the last few years, the University has evolved a good number of innovative and healthy practices to create still more congenial atmosphere for study and research. As there are countless challenges emerging in the fast changing world and there is a lot of pressure of globalisation and modernisation, there is a dire need to equip the students and the faculty with whatever is the latest and the best in the world of knowledge. Equally important is the need to be visionary and perceptive. The innovative practices take care of both the needs. If strong concern has been about strengthening research by encouraging the teachers with a number of facilities, reserved seats for the poor but meritorious students stand testimony to a visionary concern for the society. Earn while learn, extension services at doorsteps, adoption of backward rural areas for overall development by committing the faculty to the cause, transparency in admission to every course realised through entrance tests at the National, State and University level, complete democratisation in administrative and University functioning, University Website, faculty convocations addressed by top academic and administrative luminaries of the country, making the education system as open as possible and a number of credibility building measures speak of a judicious blend of vision and action.

EDUSAT Network at the University Campus
Guru Nanak Dev University is the first University of India to have EDUSAT Network at the University campus with 120 Interactive Terminals (SITs) at receiving stations to be set up at different institutions. The special feature of EDUSAT being installed at this University would have two-way communication. Both video and audio would make virtual class-room a real life situation. The initial cost of the hub and other equipment for setting up of the Earth Station at the campus and for installation of interactive terminals at remote locations would be about rupees two crores. The Director, Development and Educational Communicational Unit of India Space Research Organization (ISRO), Ahmedabad had already given his approval for this prestigious and mega project of the University. The University plans to set up Connectivity Via EDUSAT with all of its affiliated colleges and the Associated Institutes under Distance Education Programme from the current academic session 2005-06. The University in pursuance of the objectives enshrined in its Act is the first in the northern region which has taken up the initiative with ISRO for securing uplinking facility with EDUSAT. The Prime Minister of India as well as the Chief Minister of Punjab has evinced special interest in setting up this facility in the University with the approval of ISRO. The University submitted a project to ISRO for setting up of an Earth Station, including hub at the University campus with downlinking (interactive) facility at 120 receiving locations including its regional campuses at Jalandhar and Gurdaspur and also at the constituent colleges at Jalandhar and Niari (District Gurdaspur). The University had already chalked out ambitious plans by using the proposed e-connectivity for telecasting lectures by experts in different fields, sharing valuable information about higher education, providing information regarding funding schemes of the national and international bodies, projecting activities of all kinds of the University as well as of the institutions. In addition to Online Live Lectures, the University has also plans to have connectivity with other higher education channels and bodies like AICTE, Consortium of Educational Communication (CEC) etc. for realizing full benefits of the project. The full potential of EDUSAT is restricted not to on-line lectures alone. Its full potential could be envisioned in terms of E-connectivity for information sharing relating to all aspects of education i.e. access to lectures of world class experts, sharing of information relating to schemes of the UGC, AICTE, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and other national and world level bodies and institutions, sports activities, cultural activities, seminars, e-conferences and workshops, on-line examinations and much more. This has been made possible by the interactive nature of the KU band at which the EDUSAT operates. At present, several institutions in India are telecasting their lectures on higher education channels like 'Gyan Darshan', 'DD Bharti' etc. but they are not interactive. Indeed, he said, the students on these channels have to contact the experts delivering lectures online via telephone for any queries. Thus, these systems are Tele-conferencing based systems. But, videoconferencing i.e. two way communication, both video and audio, is a special feature of the EDUSAT which would make virtual class-room a real life situation. EDUSAT would play an important role by way of convergence of higher education at the national and global levels, but its success would depend upon what percentage of students and at what cost, this facility would be made available. Nevertheless, the challenges are wide open and University is prepared to meet them.

Colleges affiliated to the University

For the working classes college development committees are in the offing. Women harassment prevention committees have been organised to check the sexual assaults on women teachers and female students. On the publication side, booklets containing academic information and telephone charts are periodically published and despatched to the colleges. The exhaustive list of courses and the innovating schemes have earned many firsts for the college development council and the University. Courses like Management, Information Technology, Physiotherapy, Design and Fashion are widely spread at the post-graduate, under-graduate and diploma level. These courses aim at equipping the students professionally thereby enabling them to meet the global needs.

Annual Convocation
31st Annual Convocation of the University was held on May 1, 2005. It was addressed by Mr. Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday, Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan. His memorable remarks were: "Sink our differences before they sink us all". Guru Nanak was the great re-conciliator of conflicting beliefs and the legendary champion of INTER-FAITH harmony. But we refused to oblige. We cut each other's throats. We shed innocent blood. We separated the loved ones from their dear ones. We rendered thousands of blossoms – orphans and we turned hundreds of smiling and sparkling wives into lifeless widows. 'Guru Ji, our heads hang in shame, but all is not lost. We seem to have learnt footsteps to rediscover the path that you showed to us.' University honoured Mr. Justice Ramday, Marshal of the Indian Air Force, Mr. Arjan Singh and Dr. Manohar Singh Gill, former Chief Election Commissioner of India and presently Member Rajya Sabha with Honorary Degrees in recognition of their commendable contribution in their respective fields. The University on this occasion also honoured a renowned playwright and Director, Dr. Atamjit and a former Hockey Olympian Ajit Pal Singh with Gold Medals for their valuable contribution in their respective areas.

School of Legal Studies

The university from the academic session 2002 has started a School of Legal Studies, an institution of its own kind in the whole Northern India at its new Regional Campus, Ladhewali, Jalandhar to impart quality based and socially relevant instruction in the BA, LLB (Hons.) Course. The duration of this course is five years, consisting of 10 semesters. The object of this School is to meet the new challenges in legal education by adopting latest teaching and research methodology, so as to compete with other national level Law Schools/Institutes in the country.

School of Social Sciences
New courses in BA (Hons School) in Social Sciences at the newly established School of Social Sciences have been specifically designed and meant for outstanding students, who after completing 10+2 wish to excel in social sciences for higher teaching and research or to prepare for competitive examinations. The existing under-graduate courses have been designed for exceptionally brilliant students whose talents remained under-utilized during their graduation in arts and social sciences.

Punjabi Folklore Museum
To popularise Punjabi folklore and to ward it off lecherous distortions, the university has started building up Punjabi Folklore Museum. The Museum provides a fairly desirable knowledge of the rich diversity of the Punjabi folklore which forms the true spirit of the rural Punjab, but which is at discount in the face of materialistic onslaughts. To preserve the rich heritage of Punjabi culture, the university has setup Heritage Village on its campus so as to resurrect consciousness among the younger generations of Punjab which are gradually becoming oblivious of the richness of Punjabi culture. The Heritage Village attracts the future generations as well towards the catholic culture of Punjab. Domestic appliances and the ones used for agriculture purposes like Hult, Khras, Gidda, Khuhi, Velna, Sath etc. have been procured. A number of items of art craft are also being procured from different sources.

Research Projects

So far 55 research projects in different departments have been completed and 22 Research Projects are being worked upon. Some of these are funded by foreign agencies and others by Indian agencies like DST, CSIR, UGC, ICSSR, DBT, DRDO, Ministry of Defence, ICAR, Ministry of Social Justice and Environment, INSA, AICTE, Punjab Government, Forest Department etc.
The all round excellent performance has paid rich dividends as the University has become the first in North India to get assessed from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and got the highest Five Star Level status.
