 Birth rate, Death Rate and Infant Mortality Rate

The State Government endeavors to popularize various methods of family welfare to control the population growth.  The birth rate decreased from 21.2 per thousand in 2001 to 20.8 per thousand during the year 2002. In urban areas it decreased from 18.7 per thousand in 2001 to 18.1 per thousand in 2002 and in rural areas decreased from 22.1 per thousand in 2001 to 21.7 per thousand in 2002.  The death rate increased from 7.0 per thousand in 2001 to 7.1 per thousand in 2002.  In  urban areas its decreased from 6.4 per thousand in 2001 to 6.2 per thousand in 2002 and in rural areas it increased from 7.2 per thousand in 2001 to 7.4 per thousand in 2002.  The infant mortality rate per thousand live births in Punjab has decreased from 52.0 per thousand in 2001 to 51.0 per thousand in 2002.  In the urban areas it decreased from 37.0 per thousand of live birth in 2001 to 35.0 per thousand of live birth in 2002.  In rural area it remained same as it was in 2001.

There were 2242 medical institutions in the State as on Ist April, 20014.  Out of these there were 205 hospitals, 14 hospital-cum-community health centers, 60 community health centers, 43 community health centers cum-primary health centers, 441 primary health centers and 1479 subsidiary health centers/dispensaries/clinics.  There were 25192 beds in all these hospitals in 2003-04.  The population served per institution increased from 11095 in 2002-2003 to 11461 in 2003-04.  On an average each institution served a radius of 2.7 Kms during 2003-04.  during the year 2003 (P) 416305 indoor and 11819778 outdoor patients were treated  as compared to 457000 indoor and 11751000 outdoor patients  in 2002.

Family Welfare Programs

During the year 2003-04 total number of 97598 operations (1638 vasectomy and 95960 tubectomy) were performed as against the number of 101738 cases performed during the previous year.

Expectancy of Life

With the multiple efforts of the State Government especially in terms of improvements in the standard of living and availability of medical facility, the expectancy of life at birth in the State has increased during 1996-2001 as compared to earlier estimation during the year 1991-1996 interval.  The life expectancy of male during 1996-2001 was 68.4 years whereas it was 66.6 years during 1991-1996.  The life expectancy of female was 71.4 years  in 1996-2001 as compared to 66.6 years in 1991-1996. While comparing the life expectancy of Punjab with all India it is observed that both male and female of Punjab has better life expectancy than in Indian since 1976-1980 to 1996-2001.
